Cindy Sheehan

Camp Casey, Crawford, TX

Up-to-date news about Cindy Crawford and "Camp Casey" outside of President Bush's Ranch in Crawford.

First - How it all Began

Cindy Sheehan was just another concerned mother. The war in Iraq had begun and her 24-year-old son, Casey, was an Army Specialist. Like any concerned parent, she closely watched the news about the war in Iraq and saw that things didn't seem to be going "all flowers and open arms" as the Whitehouse had predicted.

Then, came that fateful day in April, 2004 when Cindy recieved the knock at the door. Have you ever heard the sound of a mother screaming for her son?

Second, and Third

As Cindy learned more about the war, and how the President lied to convince American's that it was necessary (remember the WMDs?), she understood that her son's death was unecessary, even "murder". Cindy, and others, founded Gold Star Families and she began speaking out against this immoral and illegal war. Eventually, she began to meet with other military veterans and ended up at the Veterans for Peace conference in Dallas in August, 2005 to talk to other young veterans of the Iraq war...much like her own son, only alive. She'd had enough!

President Bush was "vacationing" just down the road in Crawford, so Cindy and a few others headed out to see if they could get close enough to get someone to come out and respond to their questions. The President's team was alerted and on August 6 the President (or should we conclude Carl Rove) sent national security adviser Steve Hadley and deputy White House chief of staff Joe Hagin to speak with Cindy. Cindy thanked them for coming out, but demanded to speak to the President himself so she could ask, "What did my son die for?" The President refused.

That's when "Camp Casey" began. Cindy said she'd camp out until the President came out to speak to her or left Crawford...as long as it took. Immediately folks throughout Texas, urged on by Texans for Peace, Veterans for Peace - Texas, Military Familijes Speak Out, and Code Pink - Texas, began getting the word out. Some joined the next day, bringing flashlights, bugspray, and water. Soon others followed, and as the story got out in the press worldwide, more and more voiced their support for Cindy. The Crawford Peace House, started by folks with the Dallas Peace Center, stepped up and helped to coordinate the flood of interested persons. Soon, it all snowballed and that's where we are

today. Bush, refusing to speak to Mrs. Sheehan an American mother whose son was sacrified in the war in Iraq, and the nation waiting and watching.

NOW

Texans are calling folks throughout the nation to come to Crawford and challenge President Bush directly on the issue of the war in Iraq. We demand an End to the War, and an answer to Cindy Sheehan's question.

USA: Cindy Sheehan — ending the Iraq war where it began - by Charlie Jackson, Texans for Peace

The prequel to the war in Iraq began in the northern summer of 2002 when neo-conservatives within US President George Bush’s administration met at his ranch outside Crawford, Texas. The neo-cons argued that Saddam Hussein was like the terrorists who had attacked New York on 9/11 and that the president should eliminate this threat by invading Iraq. The rest, shall we say, is history. In the small town of Vacaville, California, a family worried about the possible effects of the war in Iraq on their son, Casey Sheehan......
