PEACELINKS - Statewide &
More Texas Cities
Texas,
is a "state of mind" -
Texians broke away from Mexico in 1836, founding
a new Republic. In 1845 it joined the United
States. The history
of this state is as varied as its people
who come from all parts of the world. Two presidents,
Dwight
David Eisenhower and Lyndon
Baines Johnson, were born in Texas and both
George
Herbert Walker Bush and President
George Walker Bush hail from Texas as well.
Known as the "Lone Star State
and for the "6
flags" that have flown over it, Texas
is today the second largest state in the U.S.
and goes by the state motto "friendship".
A large
and diverse state, Texas has more trees
than Virginia, more coastline than California,
more desert than Arizona, and is more fun than
almost anywhere.
Texas remained largely rural until
World War II, with cattle ranching, oil, and
agriculture as its main industries. In 1926
San Antonio had the largest population of any
city in Texas with only 120,000 people. After
World War II, Texas became increasingly industralized
and is now an international business and technology
center. The state passed New York in the 1990s
to become the second-largest U.S. state in population
(after California).
