F.O.R. CENTRAL TEXAS (AUSTIN)
The
Central Texas chapter of F.O.R. dates back to WWII
where F.O.R. members refused to participate in killing
and were some of the earliest conscience objectors.
Our local group, though small, includes survivors
of WWII in Germany, veterans of the Civil RIghts
era, pacifists, preachers, students, and international
peace delegates. We charge no dues and have monthly
meetings to discuss and work on issues related to
peace and nonviolence.
ABOUT FELLOWSHIP OF RECONCILIATION (F.O.R.)
Started
in 1914 as an ecumenical organization seeking to
prevent the outbreak of war in Europe, F.O.R. has
grown to become the largest interfaith and international
peace group in the world. F.O.R. includes Jews,
Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, and people of other
faith traditions, as well as those with no formal
religious affiliation. Over the years F.O.R. lead
in organizing the American Civil Liberties Union
(ACLU), National (U.S.) Conference on Christian
and Jews, helped sponsor the "freedom rides"
and the Montgomery boycott, the Nuclear Freeze Campaign,
the Bosnian Student Project and has sponsored peace
delegations in areas of international violence.
Our
mission is "to replace violence, war, racism,
and economic injustice with nonviolence, peace,
and justice. We are an interfaith organization committed
to active nonviolence as a transforming way of life
and as a means of radical change. We educate, train,
build coalitions, and engage in nonviolent and compassionate
actions locally, nationally, and globally."
