for 2008
Committees and Working Groups are
the backbone of Texans for Peace, as an entirely
volunteer-led organization. Take a look at the
exciting committees and project for 2008 and find
one that fits your interests, abilities and time.
Let us know if you are interested in serving as
a committee member, or are willing to serve as
its chairperson.
COMMITTEES
2008 SIGNUP FORM
End the War in Iraq Working Group - Petition
drives, rallies and protests, signs, t-shirts,
congressional visits and the "End the War"
website with daily news from Iraq (http://www.texansforpeace.org/endthewar).
There's plenty still to be done in the coming
year to bring the war to an end (and to prevent
future wars).
T4P Chapter Resources Working Group (new
for 2008) - Will provide materials, speakers
and support for local T4P chapters around the
state. As chapters grow, this committee will help
strengthen the bonds between communities around
Texas.
Outreach Committee to Allied Organizations
- Provides the connections between all of the
many organizations around the state that are working
on peace or social justice issues - from churches
to women's groups - and build stronger networks.
T4P Fundraising Committee - Home fundraisers,
annual letter, t-shirts and other fundraising
ideas. Texans for Peace 2008 budget will probably
be in excess of $14,000 and we rely entirely on
fundraisers and donations to fund Texans for Peace.
Social Equality and Equity Working Group
- Issues of race, gender, sexuality and economic
justice that affect the lives of every Texan.
This committee helps bring issues to the attention
of Texans for Peace and the statewide office and
ensures that T4P is a loyal ally in equality and
equity.
T4P Publicity Committee - Public relations,
news releases, articles and stories. Also encourages
members to submit their own stories and editorials
on peace and social justice in Texas build up
the electronic linkages of the T4P websites (http://www.texansforpeace.org/).
Texas Families Working Group - Issues
affecting families, including violence in the
home, school and community and how to make Texas
a better place in which to live. Also works on
immigration and stopping the death penalty and
other issues that impact the lives of Texans everyday.
Environmental Justice Working Group
- Issues affecting the environment and quality
of life for Texans, particularly where we impact
the environment and the planet where we live.
Most of the statewide issues center on water quality,
energy production and parks.
Counter-military Recruiting/Army Wrong
Campaign Working Group - stopping war where
it begins, with the militarization of Texas' youth
and the "Army Wrong" website (http://www.armywrong.net)
We would like to expand counter-military efforts
to more communities around the state.
Women's Business Center of Baghdad/Iraq
Refugees Committee - Ongoing effort to support
women entrepreneurs in Iraq, Iraqi refugees http://www.acceleros.com/WBCB
and visits to the Middle East
Teaching Peace in Texas Schools 4th Annual
Conference Committee - Annual conference highlighting
materials and strategies to reduce violence in
school and among our children. The 2008 conference
is scheduled to be held in Austin in the fall.
Peace Ambassadors Committee (new
for summer/fall 2008) - Trained representatives
of peace and nonviolence to serve as 'ambassadors
of peace' in Texas, the nation and world. Focuses
also on the ongoing work of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi and others.
